If you're really good and your timing is perfect you can parry them with your shield though, although I don't recommend it because the time window is extremely small and if you mess it up and get hit, you're in deep trouble. The weapon parry of the heavy blunt "quick-tap" heavy attack doesn't seem to work at all OTOH.
